: Hi Roy, this time two years ago the local alternative paper published an
: article about the authors experience becoming fog bound on the Chesapeake
: in their Current Designs double and another parallel story of two
: fisherman that had a capsize with one of the men drowning in cold waters.
: I was on my soap box in response to the article as it was attempting to
: highlight the dangers of cold-water boating but the "kayaking"
: authors totally missed the boat ,so to speak, in their recommendations.
: Although well meaning the authors did not delineate proper clothing for
: being on a boat and being in a kayak. Fiber-pile, wool caps, and a pfd
: were used as examples for clothing. The authors mentioned ownership and
: paddling experience of 8 years with this double "without ever
: experiencing a capsize". There was no mention in the article about
: having practiced rescues in that stable double or how "boating"
: in a kayak is fundamentally different than "boating" on a boat.
: My concern was that the article was misleading as to the preperation
: required for a person to be safe paddling in a kayak in Dec. Fiber-pile
: and wool caps don't do it any more than neoprene or a dry-suit does. But
: being in the water practicing the rescues will.We kayakers work hard thinking thru many bad possibilities. My closest to death experiences were almost hit by thunderboats at 110mph on an open river(not a closed race course) and almost hit by a cab while crossing the street in Puerto Rico. Kayaking is safe and wonderful and does a lot to keep me sane. Everyone needs a dream and some drive to get there. In winter I am eating less junk and going to the gym to prepare for races in spring. I love my wife partly she is so supportive of my love for kayaking. And I love my boats as part of the family or as children. We are one in the boat in the water and I feel we do a fine job of being as safe as possible. In our boats there is a kinship with everyone that has ever paddled. The greatest danger is sleeping your life away while you flip thru the channels as you sit on the couch. There are wonderful bodies of water out there for us to be a part of. In my kayak, I am of the eternal motion and rythym of the waves- safe in the arms of Jesus!
