: A few more comments. A few of you are pushing towards the Greenland style
: paddle. I can recognize there obvious visual differences but how does the
: paddle technique differ? Also I will some day build my own paddle. For now
: however I'm wanting to get this boat in the water. I'm also on a limited
: budget so I'll further define and "entry level" paddle. I'm
: looking to spend no more than $150 dollars. I'm currently looking at
: products such as Bending Branches and Sawyer. Let me know if you have any
: experience with these or similiar paddles. Thanks again. P.S. I see there
: are some fellow free fallers out there. Blue Skies!
Sorry no experience with Sawyer or Bending Branches products.A greenland paddle doesn't have to have the whole blade submerged for just cruizing. When you need more power for turning ,accelerating or bracing you just bury the whole blade for more surface area.Because its simple (unfeathered and no power face and back face)it doesn't dive when sculling. When rolling you don't have to worry if the power face is down or have to grab the tip of the non working blade for an extended paddle sweep. One reason rolling is hard to learn is disorientation when upside down,it's hard to think slowly and rationally underwater, your natural inclination is to panic and struggle to the surface. The simpler the process is the easier it can be executed without a lot of thought, just a instinctive sweep
hip flick and lean back. Also I like the looks of them, esthetics are important too.I use my Euro paddle for river tripping but like the greenlander for rough water big lake playing and cruizing. If lack of Bucks are the issue making a greenlander or euro paddle can be done cheaper than buying one. That my opinion anyhow.PS are you a jumper? I did about 900 jumps during the 70's and into the 80's but not since, there are more mountains to climb,I thought the "Blue skies and soft landings"salutation applied to Sea kayaking also.
