I know of no one whose done that type of thing. I do know there was a guy up here that crossed all five of the lakes at their centers. However, I know of nobody that's done that type of thing before. I think it took him over 36 hours maybe less. There's a web site somewhere out there that I found on it. Somebody else on this board probably has the URL.
The girlfiend and I looked at the possibility of circumnavigating Isle Royal this summer. But that northwest section didn't leave a warm fuzzy in my tummy. She's got less experience than I do and I was terrified of it, not to mention that both of us will probably get new boats in a few months. So you've got the new untested-ish equipment factor as well.
Attaching a RADAR reflector on top of a pole would probably give you more of an edge that a reflector mounted onto your deck. Two or three stacked on top of one another would probably reflect much more energy back to the antenna. You could also wrap the pole with mylar for a little added reflectivity. Somebody also mentioned beer or coke cans, they can be picked up quite easily on RADAR provided the conditions are right.
If you do decide to do that, the old world war two surplus, and probably exisiting military surplus reflectors, work best than any of those new fangled contracptions. One of the sailing mags did some test on them a while back, maybe last year or so. Anyway they tested quite a few reflectors and they found that the old military surplus reflectors and the round aluminum reflectors made by Davis were pretty darn good. There was one reflector that did better than those two, and only slightly so, but for a whole lot of money.
One thing to keep in mind is that Lake Superior can be very nasty when ever she wants to be. If you go over the reflector on a pole will probably compromise the ability to roll back up should the need arise. And I would not want to wet exit in that water, it's darn cold all year long.
