Nice post Jerry. The Ferry guys in the San Juans tell me they can see kayakers on their radar, but, as you mention, if it gets choppy they can loose them due to their lowness to the water. I think Christian is wise to do something to increase his visibility. I wonder about the foil covered baloon. My Furuno radar is less sensitive than those aboard the ferries, so if it's calm I'll see kayaks, but otherwise not at all. As for a broadcast on VHF from a handheld in a kayak, I see no harm in that at all. One could contact vessel traffic and let them know of your crossing plans if they involved a nightime crossing in heavy traffic areas. But again I think it's wise to avoid crossing in fog in such areas at all costs. Also kayakers need to carry a sound making device and technically sound at 2 min intervals per Rule 35 (i) Now common sense tells us that when travelling in a remote are we aren't likely to do this, however, in Fog the airn horn is what will warn others, not lights. Fog presents the biggest danger to kayakers of being struck by another vessel in my mind.
