I have toyed with the idea of doing a crossing of Lake Superior from Isle Royal to Houghton. My chief concern (besides endurance) is shipping combined with fog or darkness. I am thinking of attaching a commercial deflector to a fiberglass rod to raise it about 6' above the kayak. Even if it only improves chances slightly, I think this might be worth while. If I hear engine noise approaching, I would definitely put out a VHF call, law or no law.

So far my wife has talked me out of it. Perhaps I can convince her to drive the two day shuttle this summer...

PS - do you know of anyone who's done the crossing, and how long it took the paddler to make the crossing?
