Thanks MH, So for a boat forward of your position the aft combo has to be high enough to clear ones torso to be effective, that's why I mentioned placing the red/green running lights forward with the white light aft. I belive Stearns makes/made a 4-AA cell light with the 360 fresnel lens, altering it to have a red/green section with no white showing with the same light aft (but white with the appropriate degree spread sounds like the way to go. The idea of paddling around unlit with a flashlight sounds iffy to me, as does being only partially lit with a combo stern light set-up.
You've shifted my thinking on the whole topic. My standard set-up, besides not paddling in traffic, was to have a white light on all the time behind me, shoulder strobe if needed, shoulder LED divers marker for fellow paddlers when aft light was off, very strong flashlight (3-4C-cell halogen) on forward deck if needed, and small flashlight in pfd.Time to search our Radio Shack and see if some high output red and green LEDs (constant) could be put into use for running lights.
