: Yes, you have it figured correctly. The option discussed in the thread which
: would be legal is to have a combo light mounted astern on some sort of
: post. It consists of the side lights and stern light. This may not make
: sense to paddlers, and I want to assure all of you that I did not make the
: Rules.: Also understand that I am not saying don't carry a strobe. Just don't
: use it unless it's an emergency, which an imminent collision certainly is.
: Paddling in heavily congested water subject to commercial travel at night
: is dangerous. Use common sense.Part two of the above certainly makes sense and one might almost turn it around and say "DO carry a strobe, but FOR THIS PURPOSE ONLY". And the most important thing is to understand how dangerous those waters really can be.
A kayaker travelling without lights or with well positioned lights normally has his eyes adapted to the dark and sees even very dim distant lights easily. The same does not hold for someone in a craft with white lights on for reading charts, etc. Their night vision is zero, and it takes some time before they see anything in the dark after stepping out on the bridge.
So do not think that others see as well as you yourself do.
As for part one I'd like to say that having those red and green sector lights will help the other fellow decide which side he should pass you on. You are moving slowly and just one white light will not tell others which way your bow is pointing. They would like to know this.
