: But Murray, a masthead tricolor is just that; red/green in front and white in
: the rear, at the proper angles. You must be thinking i'm mistaken about
: the steaming light, which on the sailboat is in addition to the tricolor,
: only displayed when under power.Don, we are not in disagreement. You are correct about a kayak not needing a forward masthead light. If you read my post i say clearly that a kayak may show a combination light (side lights and sternlight - no masthead light) as a sailing vessel of less than 20m would. Nowhere do I suggest a forward facing white light. Please dont confuse this with a white light or torch which should be carried and shone only to warn other vessels. Kayakers have a choice between this white light/lantern, and/or a combo light. If you run a combo light do not simultaneously run your white torch. This stuff can get confusing so it's best to get a copy of the Rules. It's far more detailed and clear than Chapmans, as it explains things more fully.
