Certification is a touchy subject in all areas of life. I have run into this idea in the martial arts world as well. It seems to me that the people pushing for certification have three agendas:
1- money - they have found a way to make money by forcing people to take THEIR course at a hefty expense and then re-certify every year or so.
2- power - they want their organization to be the recognized experts in the field whether they are in fact the best is another story. (Usually they are not.)
3- a honest wish to do good - for this reason I do support certification of instructors but only to a point. If the BCU wishes to certify instructors that is fine but when they start saying that they are the standard while all the other organizations or individuals don't measure up and try to force legislation making THEIR program mandatory I draw the line. (I am not pointing at the BCU, I am only using this as a "what if" scenario.)
I really have only one question; Is there ANYTHING in this life that I can do without having someone who thinks they are looking out for my best interest meddling in it?
As we have all seen the problems with certification in various parts of our lives, I am suggesting a new and novel approach to the problem; We simply tell everyone who tries kayaking that it is a dangerous activity and that it is up to them to aquire the knowledge, skills and judgement that are required. We tell them that should they chose to continue kayaking they will do so at their own risk and will not be able to sue anyone for their own stupidity. In short we will tell them to turn on their brain, use their common sense and accept the consequences of their actions.
Wouldn't this be a innovative solution?
