i think that if you're going to work in the paddling field ... guiding and/or instruction, getting a BCU (coach .. not that silly "star" system) and/or ACA certification is a valid consideration. certainly there are some terrific paddlers on the water who don't have certification but probably could get it if they chose to. i think they're the exception though. the skills associated with and required for BCU and ACA certification aren't usually attained by the casual paddler. i believe one needs a progression of skill levels coupled with a significant amount of on the water practice before you attain that level of proficiency required of a BCU coach for example. note that having attained that level of paddling skill doesn't make you a good teacher. instructing others requires practice, an ability to communicate what you've learned to others with different learning styles, feedback from others who ARE good teachers and/or guides. bottom line --- yes, having attained BCU coach and ACA coastal kayaking certification i think i'm a significantly better paddler than i was before i progressed up those ladders.
