: FYI, this is not an issue with a manual pumps (deck or foot). All manual
: pumps include check valves, so backflow through the pump is not possible.True, we use them for back-up. The nice thing about the electric pump is that you can use the rest of your body for things like paddling and bracing while the pump empties the boat.
: If you're going to do this, I suggest you use an elbow on the deck to direct
: the water to the side, so you're not getting showered while you pump.Gee, I guess I am going to do it. I've been buying, selling, building, paddling and teaching kayaks and kayaking since 1971, so I'm pretty well commited at this point. Depending upon deck camber, an elbow may not be needed. I have two boats with arched decks and straight through-hull outlets and have had no problems whatsoever with getting sprayed by the pumps. They just spout like a whale out and back from the cockpit. I have another with a recessed "dent" in the deck for the pump (in front of the cockpit) and a straight-line fitting that shoots up and out to the side.
: That's fine as long as you're not in rough water. If water is washing over
: the boat, it'll take forever to empty it as it will constantly be
: re-filling. Most skirts that I've used will not stay on the coaming well
: if any section is not fully seated. That's why it's better to run pumps through-deck.
: This sounds good in theory, but have you ever tried it? Under the conditions
: of a typical rescue, it's going to be a major pain to do.Can be, but it might allow you to use your hands for something other than pumping. Here again, a through-deck is better. I realize that it bucks the current "no boundries - extreme sport" mentality that seems to be invading most wilderness sports these days, but in my opinion, a "typical rescue" should be no rescue. No amount of hardware is a substitute for sound technique and learning to paddle within your limitations and abilities. Rescues should be well practiced, very rare and anything but typical.
