The GBK sponsons are a very professionally made ( in the good old US of A ) item, I doubt if self made sponsons would be as reliable, or convenient.
The kayaking industry as a whole, with some exceptions, does not take safety as seriously as it could. Its not profitable to do so especially when its growing like it is now. So, great websites like this one take up the cause. Don't bash Tim too badly, he's actually a very nice guy with a very good product.
