: Decent marine bilge pumps are designed to lift water at least 4-5 feet. The
: short distance between the cockpit floor and deck of a kayak is no
: problem. Many of them have no check-valve to prevent water entry, so
: putting one close to the waterline is a good way to get water coming into
: your boat through the outlet.FYI, this is not an issue with a manual pumps (deck or foot). All manual pumps include check valves, so backflow through the pump is not possible.
: Put the outlet on the deck.
If you're going to do this, I suggest you use an elbow on the deck to direct the water to the side, so you're not getting showered while you pump.
: If you don't
: want to drill a hole in the deck, you can also stick about 3' of hose on
: the pump and just hang the end out of the cockpit when the pump is
: working. That's fine as long as you're not in rough water. If water is washing over the boat, it'll take forever to empty it as it will constantly be re-filling. Most skirts that I've used will not stay on the coaming well if any section is not fully seated.
: You may even be able to route the hose out the chimney of your
: spray skirt. This sounds good in theory, but have you ever tried it? Under the conditions of a typical rescue, it's going to be a major pain to do.
