If you decide to go the sponson route, DO NOT buy Sea Wings sponsons. The owner of the company, Tim Ingram, is a nut case who's openly encouraging people to sue kayak manufacturers in an effort to force the industry to include sponsons with every kayak sold. If you need any verification of this, check out the rec.boats.paddle newsgroup and you'll see his insane ranting everywhere. He does not deserve our dollars.
Sponsons appear to be easy to make. One useful thing that Tim Ingram does provide on his web site is instructions for installing Sea Wings. The diagram shows that they are nothing more than a couple of floats, some webbing, buckles and a bit of rope. It should be easy to construct something similar at home, for a lot less than the outrageous price of Sea Wings.
