Hi Dwight,
I'm with you man!! Solo paddling is my favourite. I have even avoided going out with groups simply because I don't want to be responsible for anyone but myself. This may sound selfish but I kayak as a recreational pursuit and because I enjoy spending time alone, a lot, solo is my choice. I spend my whole working day dealing with other people's problems and constantly helping them. I then come home to two children who demand my attention as they rightly should. So when I get an opportunity to go kayaking I don't want people around to worry about, talk to or give advice to, I want to go out their and enjoy the peace and quiet of a great day, weekend or week.
I was on a lake one long weekend and the people camping around me thought I was anti-social because I did not talk to them constantly so imagine what people I actually went with would think!! I can go for days or weeks without talking to people and it doesn't hurt my feelings.
Anyway, that is why I chose solo and why I have spent a great deal of time addressing the issues of safety associated with it.
Ian
