Hi Mick,
being as my Standard was fairly new and a friend had a similar problem with the same radio I simply returned it to West Marine (their pretty good about that) and went with the Garmin. When I cooked my Garmin I called them up and dealt directly with them. I had a new radio in about two weeks. Both companys are well known for being easy to deal with so you can't go wrong. As far as using the bag goes, I feelthat even if it is covered under warranty, I don't want it to fail when I need it. I keep it teathered to the deck and secured under my front bungies. My teather is long enough that I can grab it and use it without unhooking it. I would prefer to carry it on my person but havent found a good way to do that yet.
I carry it in a bag as I am a firm believer in Murphy's law.
