Hi Brian,
: I don't agree with your assessment of deck pumps. The Compac 50 on my
: Nordkapp moves 60-80 liters per minute (15.5-20.75 gal./min.). I've only
: needed to use it once so far and I was surprised by how quickly it emptied
: the boat.I'll certainly conceed that a deck pump is easier to operate, since it can be done with one hand. And in those instances when a built-in pump is indicated, it may well be the best way to go. My point is that the foot pump won for me when I was doing the research last year. I find it personally easier to deal with rather than all that hardware between my knees.
Further I fould that both the foot pump and the deck-mounted pump were slower than the 10 gal/min hand-held pump. The distributer tells me that the Compac 50 is rated for 39 L/min. I still feel, in my experience, that the hand-held was faster. To that end, I do not plan to fit future boats with any kind of built-in pump. At least not until I get around to that trans-oceanic paddle of my dreams. ;-)
What ever your beliefs, at the end of the day it's a boat, so go out and paddle while the water is still liquid. Hey I've got an idea, let's test the pumps out on Saturday at the Cold Water workshop. The winner gets bragging rights and the other guy buys the coffee.
