Hand vs. deck. vs. foot

As you know, I'm in complete agreement that a good roll is worth a hundred pumps.
I'll also defer to your experience regarding foot pumps, except to comment that the major advantage of them is that they allow hands-free pumping. They may take longer to empty the boat, but at least the paddler can brace, paddle or even roll if necessary while emptying the boat.
I don't agree with your assessment of deck pumps. The Compac 50 on my Nordkapp moves 60-80 liters per minute (15.5-20.75 gal./min.). I've only needed to use it once so far and I was surprised by how quickly it emptied the boat.
Compared to a handheld pump, the deck pump is much easier to operate. The back and forth motion is much more efficient that trying to hold a pump down with one hand and operate it with the other, as with a handheld pump. Considering how fatiguing pumping can be, I have to believe that I can pump more water out of my boat faster with the deck pump than with a handheld unit.
