vhf questions

: I have owned both the Standard and the Garmin models. They are both fairly
: easy to operate even in a waterproof bag. Even the rotating nobs on the
: garmin are pretty easy one handed through a bag. I have acidentally
: switched on my garmin when it is on my deck by hitting it. Not a big deal,
: but I would hate to have my batteries run down before I need them. I would
: definately recommend using even a "submersible" radio in a
: waterproof bag. I like to keep my radio on my deck "just in
: case" and am on my third submersible of the season! The first two
: died due to water damage(one standard, one garmin). My latest (the Garmin)
: is surviving nicely in the bag that is no longer completely waterproof.
: Buy submersible, but keep it in a bag. When you need it is no time to take
: chances with it.: John Leonard
Hi John
Thanks for the info. Both this years horizon 350s and garmin 725 have 3 yr guarantees, so see if you can send yrs back and maybe you'll get them replaced?
Might be worth checking out. There seems (from reading around) a duality of opinions on whether to use a bag or not. I think I'll not for 2 1/2yrs, see if works ok, if so continue without. But if have to send back, I'll start using a bag.The horizon has the rotating knobs on the far side of the radio this time wheras the garmin has push buttons just on the front(send on nearside). I hear what you say about rotaters being usable from outside the bag and with one hand but when they're both being tried side by side, one is way easier.
My intention would be to clip to the pfd up near the shoulder near the mouth but how do you operate it without whichever hand reaches over not covering the mouthpc? Do you actually unclip it? I really want a true one hands operation.
