In Response To: bilge pumps (Dwight)

: : Dwight.

One "low tech" solution which has served me is to slide the red foam float down the pump cylinder to the intake end. Then place the intake valve in the bilge and close your thighs around the cylinder trapping the float beneath the thighs-providing counter-traction to the pumping action. You can then pump with one hand. Since I would have have done a re-enter and roll to get back aboard in this situation, I already have a paddle float on one blade. I would place the loom across my shoulders/neck, while sculling with one hand on the appropriate side for support, while I empty the boat. Next summer I'm going to work on getting my skirt attached, while inverted; because the last step of re-securing the skirt in heavy water w/o being able to brace is very hard for me.
