: Could you elaborate on what kind of pump you used
: and where it could be purchased in Canada.I bought an ATTWOOD 500gph model from Canadian Tire's boat accessories section. It draws 1.4 amps. They also had a 1250 gph model which draws 1.8 amps. I thought about the benefit of the larger unit but it was much bigger (although it would still fit in my boat) and the price was 59.95.
The 500gph unit empties my boat in 4 minutes if it is full to the top of the coaming or in about 2 minutes if I get in and displace some of the water. I can only imagine how fast the 1250 gph model would pump!
: If I went manual I would exhaust
: the water out the top deck in front of me but an electric pump could be
: put behind the seat on the rear bulkhead and then run an exhaust line out
: the skeg trunk.I wonder if that would work.I put a through hull fitting on the deck right behind the seat and in front of the rear bulkhead. (pretty tight space) I have a 1 foot length of clear, 3/4" id PVC hose from the pump to the fitting. The hull fitting is the only hole I made in the hull. I used urethane structural adhesive to install a permanent components such as pump and switch mounting plates.
: Wouldn't a nice self contained water proof unit
: that could be snapped in and out easily be a nice idea,it would be a
: marketable unit for one of the kayaking entrepeneurs.I though about this and it is very easy to do. The big problem that I thought of was that a bilge pump is a safety item and if one of your pump system ever failed for ANY reason, you can bet that you will be sued, big time.
The system is so simple that anyone can do it. You only need to have minor skills in soldering. I built the system, tested each component and fit it, made some changes and re-fit and then tested the whole system. I then mounted everything permanently and re-tested the whole system. I had minor switch leakage on the first component test and no other problems.
During the fitting process I hit upon the idea of putting it all into a pelican box and I will build another system doing this. I want the one in my Arluk to always be in the boat. The other unit I will transfer between my other two (and hopefully more) boats.
