: Hi Shawn,
: I have been very happy with my electric pump system. I agree with Jeb that a
: roll is the BEST defense but I want a way to clear the boat efficiently.
: After having installed and used the electric pump I would not recommend
: any other pump system. (Don't forget the law, in Canada at least, says
: that you must have a manual backup to you electric bilge pump so you will
: still have to carry the had pump. Although, you may be able to claim a
: small bucket as a manual bailer.): I look at the price people pay for hand and foot pumps and think, "my
: electric system was cheaper!": pump- $16,95
: battery- $5.00 used
: Switch- $10.00 + assembly time.
: wire- free cause it was in my tool box.
: I have made a waterproof battery container but I think I may change the whole
: system to go into a Pelican box so that it is mobile and can be easily
: used in more than one kayak by putting a tie down behind the seat of each
: boat.: Pelican box- $47.00 (okay, this puts it over the price of a hand pump!!)
: I forgot to add in the fun of designing and building the whole shabang!
: I also forgot to mention that the only training you need to do is to practice
: flipping a switch!!: Now I just have to find a solar charger! Anyone got one they would be willing
: to sell to me for FREE?!?!: Ian
I belong to the hands free cockpit pump school of thought but haven't done anything about it yet except research so far.I can't even decide whether to go electric or manual.Could you elaborate on what kind of pump you used and where it could be purchased in Canada. If I went manual I would exhaust the water out the top deck in front of me but an electric pump could be put behind the seat on the rear bulkhead and then run an exhaust line out the skeg trunk.I wonder if that would work. There have been some good posts on this but it's not an exact science yet.The article in sea kayaker magazine seemed rather complicated to a Luddite like myself.Has anyone have any ideas on a fairly simple but reliable electric pump assembly with a minimum of hull chopping.Wouldn't a nice self contained water proof unit that could be snapped in and out easily be a nice idea,it would be a marketable unit for one of the kayaking entrepeneurs.
Blue skies and soft landings.
