Learing to Roll, want advice *LINK*

I want to try to learn how to roll. I have an opportunity to use a pool on a weekly basis to learn to roll.
The boat I will be using is a 16' CLC with no foot, thigh or seat bracing, no spray skirt, almost no floatation, and a high seat back (about 3" above the rear deck). The rear hatch leaks.
When flooded, the bow of the boat remains above water because the forward baffle is too far forward. The rear bulkhead provides just enough floatation to keep the boat mutually buoyant.
My thought was, rather than fix the boat now; I'd practice rolling with the boat partially submerged. I tried this last weekend and thought I was getting some good experience with the under water portion of the roll, and even managed a complete c-c roll and a very desperate and ugly hand roll. As I get better, I could start with less water in the boat. Finally, after I think I can roll, I’d do the modifications to the boat before putting it in the ocean.
I have read that it is better to practice the hip snap before attempting the other parts of the roll.
Is practicing in a submerged kayak helping or hurting?
