I'm an avid sailor, and
: canoeist, but sea kayakers seem to be the only members of the paddle sport
: family who swear by the pump. That's probably because kayakers are sitting in a puddle of water that removes body heat and destabilizes the boat if they don't get it out. Hand pumps are useful to pump out the other persons kayak while they are getting their selves together, which I find a more common usage in emergencies.
A sponge on a 1/8" line or bungie is always in my kayak. The pump/paddle float as needed, also tethered and stored under deck. It would make more sense to economize on gas or type of clothing then the most common item after paddle and skirt.
Although I've never used one a foot pump has got to be the best self-rescue pump, and hand pump convenient for assisting others.
A bucket has got to be better than nothing, but practice would be better than all.
