In Response To: Re: foot pumps and hand helds - - - (Brian Nystrom)

you said: The hand pump is then stuck down the front of the spray skirt tunnel and the cockpit is pumped out. If I were rescuing someone with a footpump. I'd expect them to use that, or both the foot and hand pumps simultaneously.

---> i've not had much luck trying to cram the handheld down the spraydeck tube .. the legs get in the way. i usually put the spraydeck fully on but for an opening in the front corner (just in front of the legs, on the lee side of the incoming wind and water and pump out using the handheld. if the victims boat is equipped with a foot pump or even a chimp, and he's in decent shape to help, i'd have him do so.

you said: Are you suggesting that the victim be left in the water until the rescuer pumps out the boat?

---> no, of course not. i meant that when turning the victims boat over and emptying it in rough water, alot of folks are too quick to right the boat (or do it poorly) and get it back in the water in order to get the victim back into it ... thus leaving the boat half full of water and necessitating a pump out. i want to get the victim back into a virtually dry boat and am suggesting that this is (a) only possible if you've got good boat over boat technique and (b) the victims boat has a bulkhead right behind the seat facilitating full water run-out.

you said: However, if the conditions are too rough for boat-over-boat emptying, i've been taught that getting the victim back into the boat with the spray skirt sealed is paramount. The rescuer then stabilizes the victim's boat
while the victim pumps. It may take some time to do this, but I've found it to be a very stable position, even in surf. If nothing else, simply being back in the boat is a big psychological boost.

---> agreed. ever run a rescue when the victim is in 'shock' and can't participate in the rescue. now there's an event! stabilizing the victims boat AND pumping it with a handheld at the same time AND setting his boat up for a stabilized tow. boy i hate when that happens. hahahaha ...

regards. :-)
