In Response To: Foot and deck pumps (Brian Nystrom)
i have hendersons in my Valley Pintail and NDK Romany. they work well but are not quick to empty your cockpit relative to a handheld plastic cheapy. the primary advantage is pumping with your foot while both hands are on the paddle ... a significant advantage in the kind of water that had you out of your boat in the first place. when i'm teaching rescues in situations where the cockpit is full of water, i have the rescuer stabilize the rescuee while clearing the cockpit with a handheld of about 80 percent of the water. that's sufficient to then have the rescued person get the sprayskirt fully on the cockpit and bale the rest with a footpump if he has one. when performing rescues, you should be able to return the rescued paddler to a virtually dry boat given the kind of cockpit configuration which lends itself to that --- i.e, bulkhead directly behind the seat. too many boats haave too much space behind the seat unfortunately making a dry rescue impossible. this is where a footpump comes in handy. :-)
