Risto,

I found your following comment about rolling a kayak to be intresting:

: Its very easy to get discouraged if one makes the first attempts in a boat
: that needs to be "vaulted" over initial resistance, and thus
: gets slammed back in the water every time!

I am new to kayaking, started paddling in June. I started in nov of 99 by emptying 3 librarys in the area of all their kayak books to study the subject.
I decided to purchase a Feathercraft K-Light. My search for an instructor
ended with a fellow 1 1/2 hrs away from me, who when I talked to him on the
phone never heard of a Feathercraft. I am told he teaches rolling in his
back yard in a pond, I havn't gone to see him or learned how to roll.
I did find a youth group that offered an intro to kayaking class (they
let me come along even thou i am 45 yrs old) and i learned how to wet exit and
entry. I folded up my kayak and packed him in his bag for now because i
don't have cold weather paddling gear (who knows what the holiday will bring).
I spent my first season just paddling allowing the idea of rolling to go
by the wayside. Although I will spend some days just exploring, I find when
I get in a kayak I just want to go... if I don't spend at least 3 hours
paddling almost non stop (pausing to drink water) I feel like I have not
paddled at all. So now that I have spent time paddling my brains out, I
am begining to once again think about learing how to roll next summer.

Here is my question to you and others on this board: somewhere in my readings
or talking to someone (I can't remember where) I was given the impression
that a Feathercraft would be a harder kayak to roll because of the internal
sponsons. When you say that some kayaks need to be "vaulted" over initial
resistance would this include my Feathercraft ?

Thank You for your assistance
Therese
