: From a limited perspective, I have agreed with your opinions on rolling. I
: have not mastered any rolling moves, but after reading everyone's
: thoughts, I will activeliy pursue it this spring when the ice is off. I
: have found that wet exists are not all that fun.Rolling on ice should be much easier; just reach down and push yourself back up! ;-)
: I've spent the last two hours reading some of your threads that tail out over
: a month or so. I'm new to kayaks, we rented two sit on tops last summer
: and I fell in love with the sport. We have since purchased two used
: perception sea kayaks and I couldn't be happier.Welcome aboard! Glad to hear you're enjoying yourself.
: The only problem is my
: limited experience and our area's lack of instructors. We paddle on the
: Mississippi and it's not what I would call Sea Kayak Central around here.I'd suggest that you check around for kayaking clubs in your area. Out here, they are the most available source for instruction and it's usually very inexpensive or free, since it's typically conducted by volunteers who do it for the good of the sport.
: Any advise on good skill books would also be helpful.
The best of the books out there, in my opinion, is "The Essential Sea Kayaker". The method they present is the one I used myself and have used successfully with others. Other books I've found helpful are "Nigel Foster's Sea Kayaking", and two books by Derek Hutchinson: "The Complete Book of Sea Kayaking" and "Eskimo Rolling". There are many different ways to teach rolling and seeing several approaches can be beneficial.
