: seemed to miss underscoring the real danger these people were in.Robert, I know what you mean. I also expected Deep Trouble would be more dramatic.
It turns out that it is not an adventure book. It is purposely devoid of poetic drama. It is meant to be a researched compendium of facts assembled and related with as much accuracy as possible. It also contains some editorializing by the authors on what could or should have been done to avoid or reduce the risk or accident.
If you approach it from this perspective, you will likely appreciate the dearth of drama, which while entertaining, would detract from the factual nature of the reports. Most high risk sporting activities such as rock climbing and caving report on accidents and near accidents in a similar manner. Actually, the authors throw just a touch of human interest reporting here and there to make it more like a book than an accident report that say a policeman or insurance adjustor would write.
