: I am new to kayaking. I would like to start by kayaking some lakes and calm
I would suggest nothing shorter than around 13 or 14 feet. I have owned a 10 footer when I first started and it will not go in a straight line, every stroke turns the boat, gets tiring very fast. The difference in cost from a 10 footer that you'll outgrow in a couple weeks to a 14 footer will be fairly minor and you may keep that boat for a couple years or more.
Also you really want a hatch in the front and back with bulkheads so the kayak will float even if full of water, those completely open boats will float with nothing in them but barely and won't float you if full of water. Ok for ponds perhaps.
