: Dowd seems to have lots of sound doubts about and second thoughts on many
: of the issues he treats, which I find kickstarts useful processes in the
: reader's mind. That's pretty much why I like him. Rather than saying "here's what I know, and that's all you need to know," he covers a lot of bases and brings out a lot of ideas.
: Hutchinson on the other hand always seems to have the one and only best
: solution on offer. Is this what you have in mind when you call him "highly
: opinionated", or is it something else?Yes. That's exactly how I see him as well. One of the other big reasons I like these books is because they are more comprehensive and cover many more areas of kayaking than do other sea kayaking books.
As far as safety goes, Sea Kayaker's Deep Trouble is the "bible" of "what not to do", but you can learn just as much from reading about others' mistakes than you can by reading about "what to do" in a book, or having the pain of making those mistakes firsthand.
Burch's Fundamentals of Kayak Navigation is a fascinating book. He goes into much more detail than the average kayaker needs, but that's what is great about this book. It is not self-limiting. It is easy enough to read for a beginner, but after a couple times cover-to-cover, an intermediate to advanced kayaker will know as much as he or she could ever want to know. An expert could memorize the book, and strive for Burch's level of understanding, and probably not ever need to know more.
