This is interesting, but better still would be to hear what the best sides of each are: why did a particular book end on this "short list" of yours?
: The two best books, in my opinion, are
:
Sea Kayaker's Deep Trouble by Matt Broze and George Gronseth
:Fundamentals of Kayak Navigation by David Burch : As far as general kayaking books go:
David Seidman's The Essential Sea
: Kayaker is pretty good
:As is Randel Washburne's Coastal Kayaker's Manual
:I like John Dowd's Sea Kayaking: A Manual for Long-Distance Touring
: the best
:Closely followed by Derek Hutchinson's Derek C. Hutchinson's
: Expedition Kayaking, which is great, but he's a highly opinionated
: (yet still entertaining!)Of these I have read only the last two, both of which I've bought years ago. Dowd seems to have lots of sound doubts about and second thoughts on many of the issues he treats, which I find kickstarts useful processes in the reader's mind.
Hutchinson on the other hand always seems to have the one and only best solution on offer. But his enthusiasm is catching...
Is this what you have in mind when you call him "highly opinionated", or is it something else? Do you perhaps think the surgeon general should attach a warning to Derek's opinions: "Can be hazardous to thought processes", as I often think?
