Books are not the greatest way to learn about kayaking--there's no substitute for actual experience and practice. That said, though, books are an excellent way to be exposed to new (to you) ideas and concepts that you might not otherwise pick up. If you see something in a book that interests you, it might spur you to seek additional information from an instructor or a fellow paddler (in real life or online).

The two best books, in my opinion, are

  • Sea Kayaker's Deep Trouble by Matt Broze and George Gronseth
  • Fundamentals of Kayak Navigation by David Burch

As far as general kayaking books go:

  • David Seidman's The Essential Sea Kayaker is pretty good
  • As is Randel Washburne's Coastal Kayaker's Manual
  • I like John Dowd's Sea Kayaking: A Manual for Long-Distance Touring the best
  • Closely followed by Derek Hutchinson's Derek C. Hutchinson's Expedition Kayaking, which is great, but he's a highly opinionated (yet still entertaining!)

: I've spent the last two hours reading some of your threads that tail out over
: a month or so. I'm new to kayaks, we rented two sit on tops last summer
: and I fell in love with the sport. We have since purchased two used
: perception sea kayaks and I couldn't be happier. The only problem is my
: limited experience and our area's lack of instructors. We paddle on the
: Mississippi and it's not what I would call Sea Kayak Central around here.
: Your discussions have been interesting and helpful.
: From a limited perspective, I have agreed with your opinions on rolling. I
: have not mastered any rolling moves, but after reading everyone's
: thoughts, I will activeliy pursue it this spring when the ice is off. I
: have found that wet exists are not all that fun.
: Sorry if my message has tended to ramble, I'm just excited that I have found
: a place I can "listen in" on other people's conversations about
: a sport I am very interested in.
: Any advise on good skill books would also be helpful.
    : Thanks,
    : Bruce
