In Response To: Are we alone??? (Jed)

Jed, as usual you have contributed a good post. I agree, and only wish to encourage people to try rolling. My frustration is simply that for whatever reason the majority of sea kayakers will spend more time arguing about why they don't need to roll, than actually trying to learn. This is a shame. And lets face it most are truly not as safe as they think they are. Every year powerboats save many kayakers. So I don't care if people never roll, I just get tired of the self limiting rationale. As an instructor I'm certain you've noticed that the easiest students to teach are the ones who have not been paddling for years in some club. They haven't been brainwashed into believing the skill is so hard. I'm gonna bail from the rolling discussion, as I'm just going to piss people off by trying to encourage them to learn an easy skill. As I've stated rather bitterly in past posts, I think most recreational sea kayakers are ill prepared and in some cases naively hazardous to other water users. How many sea kayakers have a basic knowledge of the Navigation Rules (Colregs)? In the San Juans my VHF is going off all summer long with Coast Guard requests for boaters in the area to assist kayakers in the water, or clearly in trouble. I think we undersell skills. How many brochures read "No experience necessary"
