: Hi! I'm not sure if this is the right forum for such a question, but I'm
: planning on buying a sea-kayak soon. I'm not very experienced yet, I have
: taken an intro to expedition sea kayaking course and have paddled a couple
: of times. I want to do adventure trips in remote areas for a week or so at
: a time. I work at REI in Sacramento and I can pro-deal a sea kayak but I
: don't know what one to get and there aren't many experienced sea kayakers
: at our store. I thought I'd try over here! I think I have narrowed my
: choices down to a Perception Eclipse or one of the Necky models. Any
: advice? Thanks!
May I please throw in my 2 cents. I had a wilderness systems sealution- red fiber glass that looked great in the show room but awful after i scratched it and difficult to repair those long ugly white scratches. Sealution is a wonderfully stable big water boat but I hated the rudder pedal system because I could not push off with my feet- until I laminated a one foot cube of white ethafoam and glued with 3m 77. Then I could push against the foam with my heels and steer with my toes against the rudder pedal. ACtually though I am not sure a 16 ft boat needs a rudder and would be one less potential thing to go wrong on a trip. For $1500 last fall, I bought a 19ft kevlar seda glider (slightly scratched) that is a high volume rocket(44#) that I could not turn until a former world champion added a tiller rudder that I love. Same as Olympic sprint race boats. Now I can rotate as I paddle as I use my legs to rotate and keep the arms fairly straight. I paddled the $2500 kevlar looksha 3 and hated the rudder pedals because nothing to brace my feet against to do a roll. If you paddle near rocks , may I please suggest you wear a helmet like the whitewater people always do. I cut my arm while holding my boat as we cartwheeled thru a big wave. A butterfly bandage of duct tape does help stop the bleeding until the ER. I hope you carry a waterproof phone or radio because every year some of the best kayakers die alone after being pounded by some wave. PLease make safety your main pursuit because those that underestimate the awesome power of water to slam dunk you against rocks- well I think you get the picture and I still have the scars on arm and a small one on forehead to prove that big water can smash you. There is no red button to stop the ride. Now I do flatwater racing and paddle the glider to an island for shish kabob cookout with friends. Off the subject but here is the recipe. Sprinkle meat tenderizer on london broil. One inch cubes or tough stew beef can be used if you let it marinate one or 2 extra days in Italian dressing, etc. Have a variety of green peppers, onion or small potatoes partially precooked. Soak the large sticks in cold water to keep the sticks from burning or use metal sticks with a glove to keep from burning hands. Wrap the turkey roaster full of kabobs in a plastic trash bag to reduce meat juice in the boat. I love the people with whom I paddle - they are family- we camp out together and do flat water races. Please beware those that say,"No problem, we can all paddle 18 miles thru big cold water to an island." What if you are new to skiing and they say you will love this vertical cliff of a hill with a 5000 ft drop. Maybe they will be off on their own doing their cool dude thing and leave you to fend for yourself. I told a friend at work I can ride any kind of horse. He put me on his Arabian stallion and soon I fell off backwards after that horse took me under an apple tree. Thank you Jesus I was OK but the great outdoors is often for the enjoyment of friends.
