Gosh darn it FBC, you sound reasonable, but also like someone who is yourself learning the roll. If you or anyone else out there want to become accomplished paddlers who have the skills required to more safely and skillfully pilot your craft in a manner which it was designed and capable of, then you will learn to roll! What I hear missing from these threads is the fact that all these rescue skills are preached about without challenge, but the elusive roll is somehow still reserved for the elite. This is dumb! Rolling is really no harder than a lot of these re-entry techniques!! Who, who cannot roll, can really brace well, or really effectively edge and maneuver their kayak? Yet we have guides out there who can't roll. For years I've heard people spew this stuff about not being necessary. For flat calm very limited conditions perhaps not. But if you truly believe in safety you'll make the effort (not too great) and learn this basic skill that is the foundation for so many others. I teach rolling before the paddle float re-entry!!!!! The wet exit is the first, then rolling.
By the way in big water your paddle float outrigger will be a joke, so an assisted rescue will be your option should you not have a roll. I have NEVER found a student who could not learn to roll within three sessions, most in one. Perhaps I've been lucky. By the way a roll is easier to come by than an efficient forward stroke. Blast away ya'll Who would think of river kayaking without a roll!? Why would you expose yourself to very cold open bodies of water that are prone to rapid change without the same logic? I don't have all the answers folks, but I strongly believe that most people can with minimal effort learn to roll. It's important.
