: Hi! I'm not sure if this is the right forum for such a question, but I'm
: planning on buying a sea-kayak soon. I'm not very experienced yet, I have
: taken an intro to expedition sea kayaking course and have paddled a couple
: of times. I want to do adventure trips in remote areas for a week or so at
: a time. I work at REI in Sacramento and I can pro-deal a sea kayak but I
: don't know what one to get and there aren't many experienced sea kayakers
: at our store. I thought I'd try over here! I think I have narrowed my
: choices down to a Perception Eclipse or one of the Necky models. Any
: advice? Thanks! Are you looking at the plastic or composite versions? I assume plastic. I agree with Bill that the Necky Looksha IV is a nice boat, good for expedition type trips. I also like the Perception Eclipse. I have the version for smaller paddlers, the Shadow. Are there better boats out there? Sure. Are they significantly better? - I don't think so. Most of the other boats I like for the smaller paddler (P&H Vela and Sirius S, Valley Canoe Products Avocet) cost almost twice as much. Maybe at some point I'll add to my "fleet", but for now I'm happy touring in my Shadow. I would guess that most people on this board would prefer the Necky, e.g. Looksha IV. It's good that you've paddled a number of boats. I suggest that you paddle each and then decide for yourself. Continue with the paddling, the courses and get a few books under your belt. There are a number of good books available, but I'd like to suggest Sea-Kayaker Deep Trouble (by Matt Broze and George Gronseth) and Complete Sea Kayak Touring (by Jonathan Hanson). I notice that the Deep Trouble book seems to be the most often cited book on this forum and if you've read it you'll know why. Good Luck and Happy Paddling.
