...and its not just seeing (your paddle.. or...?). There's also the nose and that lovely feeling when the water rushes in your sinuses!
Luckily one gets used to both with a bit of practice, although rolling without any nose protection probably cuts the number of tries to max 2, unless one actually has those thousands of rolls (with no masks etc.) already under one's belt.
While the un-protected nose will cut the time one can hang upside down, I actually suspect that learning to roll "blind" ie. eyes shut in the end will improve the rollers performance.
There is no reliable way to know if the blade will bite by just looking, one needs to feel this. So by not looking at all one is just eliminating one (rather useless) variable from the "equation".
One less thing to think about.
