: Some really fast canoe racers in their 40's or 50's have told me about food
: supplements such as chondroitin(shark cartilage) and glucosamine to help
: rebuild cartilage and prolong their career. Does anyone really know and if
: so what dosage to make a difference? The medical community could find evidence it works or explain why it even would. Laymen/snake oil people find a receptive audience in every generation. Sure, the glucosamine molecule is what cartilage is all about, but your chondrocytes have to make it on their own. This ability wains with age. Raising your blood plasma level of this stuff bathes your body in the stuff, but doesn't stimulate chondrocytes to act like they are 20 years old again. To me, taking the stuff is like, if your car is running slower at 100,000 miles, you pour gasoline on top of the motor to make it all better. Since nothing could be found wrong/harmful with the stuff, doctors aren't going to piss their patients off, so they say ok. Just like antibiotics, we don't want to be told wnen we're sick that it's just a virus, buck up, drink fluids, etc., the doc gives uo what we want. There are endless anecdotal stories of success, pick which one you want. Belief is a powerful thing, read the placebo studies on any drug. If it makes you feel better, do it. Dosage is totally strange, follow whatever manufacturer recommends. Eat right, be in love with someone/something, take time to boat and smell the roses, bitch when you have to,use it or lose it, all things in moderation. Good luck down the road.
