Watch out for the things you say about yourself. You might come to believe them. If you believe them, you might actually let them govern your behavior. As regards your kayaking, that would be a real shame.
I started kayaking at age 52. I took a pool rolling class 20 months ago and emerged with a bomb proof wet exit, but otherwise deeply discouraged. Couple months later I went over, surfing some chop in 50 degree water about 200 yards off shore. Any notion that a paddle float re-entry might be of any real use to me vanished. Once ashore, I bought sponsons and rigged my craft for rapid sponson deploymnent. I believed I had reached my limit.
Then I read The Essential Sea Kayaker by Seidman. I went into some shallow water (for sand braces) and, using my padddle float, taught myself to roll IAW Seidman's screw/C to C technique. Developing a fairly relaible roll has allowed an expansion of skills in the last year, I would not have thought possible. It has also opened up to me the joy of kayaking in big water and surf kayaking.
You may think of yourself as semi-retired and experiencing the inevitable decline vital capacities which visits us all, but your career in sea kayaking is just beginning.
Where I live it is getting cold and so is the water. When I think of all the junk I'll have to put on to permit rolling through the winter, and you there in South Florida...Mike, there are just no excuses...go for it. It's fun!
Friends and colleagues, seeing the smile on your face that lasts 24 hours may suspect Viagra. A sea kayaker knows better. It's the look of a man who just pulled off his first unassisted roll.
