Hi Mike,
: You make some good points. I should note that I took up kayaking when I was
: 53, bought a 21 inch beam boat, and took no lessons for 4 months. I barely
: managed to stay afloat, so until I achieved "karma" with my
: boat, I stayed in flat, calm water and away from the gas-guzzling
: monsters. Now I am OK, balance wise: You are probably right, I should probably learn to roll.
If you can paddle your boat and stay afloat in moderately rough water you already have all the skills necessary to learn to roll. All you need to do is combine the already known skills in a different manner.
Riding the waves in rough water gives you the hip motion required and being able to move the kayak with your weight in it is all you do when you roll back up. The only difference is the direction the paddle motion is made and the timing of the hip snap.
You my friend are most of the way to learning to roll, so find an instructor and and you may be surprized at how easy it really is.
