I have been looking at the Garmin 725 VHF radio. Any comments you could make about the unit would be helpful. I also carry a Garmin GPS 12 but put it in a Aquapak waterproof case when kayaking. Would do the same with the VHF radio.
Brought to you from beautiful Unalaska/Dutch Harbor, Alaska.
N 53°51.140' W 166°30.228': If you are kayaking on the ocean a VHF should be standard equipment on your
: kayak. It is the best way to get help or the attention of other vessels.
: Most also have weather channels. They also have a scanning feature so you
: can talk with other paddlers on 68 or 69 yet if there is traffic on
: channel 16 you will hear that. All vessels are required to monitor channel
: 16. I don't know if that really applies to kayaks but common sense says
: you should. As a previous post said; waterproof is only splashproof. I
: learned this lesson the hard way. I use a Garmin 725 which is submersible
: to 1 meter for 30 minutes. To make things even more confusing this is the
: same standard the Garmin GPS 12 is made to except they didn't include the
: battery compartment in that standard. Waterproofing standards vary between
: companies and it is best to call them if you don't understand.
