The longer I paddle, 20 years so far, the more I am convinced that many back and discomfort ills in kayaking are caused by/related to/negatively affected by tight hamstrings. The bent knee position via the hanstrings results in backward pelvis tip. The tighter the hamstrings, the more the backward tip of the pelvis.
All the literature and advice on ergonomic position for sitting shows that the knees should be lower than the hips. This puts the pelvis in a position such that the spinal column bones just stack up in a proper posture with very little effort-they evolved to fit together in this stack. Unfortunately, kayaking is a knees up position and you need very flexible hamstrings to get the pelvis in the right position for the spine. And when it sags, the lower back takes the brunt.
