...for the tips and insights.

I quite agree that trying these things oneself is the way to go and practice of course is just a good way to have fun and gain skills as an extra bonus. But it's also useful occasionally to ask what others think, especially experienced others.

Here I was glad to see that my earlier instinctive habit of humbly "back-tracking" to the old pawlata sweep roll was recommended by Greg. Also supported was the suspicion that it is the deck load in particular that will cause trouble if anything.

I guess one can take this thread as added incentive to practice the braces supports and sculling that come to play before the full roll. So as to be able to right the boat even when it has capsized just half-way on its side, with all the "deck-crap" keeping it in this position, off-side also.

I'm also finding plenty of support here for the party that advocates as many different techniques as one can think of, as opposed to the "one strong roll only" party. I can distinctly remember the trouble I had with my early off-side rolling attempts, when my body would only do the on-side hip snap, refusing to co-operate on the other side. But after getting over this hurdle all the off-side stuff quickly became as natural, braces and half-rolls included.
