: Hi Ian
: Since a roll is a defensive move, a defense analogy is best rather than
: offensive.Unless you believe that a good offence is often your best defence. {:o)
: Do you only block w/ your right arm? Do you only assume the
: guard w/ one leg?No, I block and punch equally on both sides and I take up my guard on both sides. I also roll my kayak equally on both sides.
: Do you roll into a hook? Do you only circle to the
: right? Assuming an awkward or desparate situation(or even say a lefty), do
: you want an option? Fighters typically assume one or the other dominant
: stances but their blocks are especially balanced and their attacks are
: also(but modified for the posture)Now you are talking fighting in a ring for points while I am talking life and death street fighting. If you want to compete in kayak rodeos for points you should probably know how to do all sorts of wild and crazy things. On a good day you will hit most of these things and win a medal. However, if you want to guarantee your survival, I would suggest picking one rolling technique and practicing it until you hit it 100% of the time under every condition.
In a street confrontation I; (a)-create a position of advantage with a simple block, and (b)-drive my fist in one side of my attacker's body and out the other with a simple punch.
Someone asked what special technique was required to roll a kayak with a deck bag? My answer is, the same technique that you use to roll a kayak without a deck bag which is the same technique you use to roll an empty kayak or a full kayak, with a wetsuit or without, with a lifejacket or without, with a partner or without, etc, etc.
Make your technique work under the hardest conditions and it will work under all conditions. Do not choose a roll to suit the conditions, make your roll work in all conditions.
