: Hi Wayne, Jed and All,
: It is my experience from other areas that simple is always better. There are
: lots of fancy things that can be done with a kayak and they do teach good
: boat handling.: My feelings on the subject are that when kayaking we need a roll that works
: 100% of the time. Anything less is not adaquate. By dividing your practice
: time between many different rolls are you in fact sacrificing the 100% ?: When I study karate I have many different techniques to chose from but when
: in a life threatening situation I will always use a select few because
: they are effective nearly 100% of the time (so far it is actually 100% but
: there is always the chance). They are the simplist, most efficient
: techniques.: Why would a life saving technique in kayaking be different than that in
: another situation?: Ian
Hi Ian
Since a roll is a defensive move, a defense analogy is best rather than offensive. Do you only block w/ your right arm? Do you only assume the guard w/ one leg? Do you roll into a hook? Do you only circle to the right? Assuming an awkward or desparate situation(or even say a lefty), do you want an option? Fighters typically assume one or the other dominant stances but their blocks are especially balanced and their attacks are also(but modified for the posture)
Notwithstanding rolls, the skill set obtained from practicing rolls on both sides is applicable to the whole spectrum of kayak moves braces and strokes from the least necessary all the way up to complete layovers. At the sculling end and even the sweep, one is just an extension of the other. An offside brace is a sweep is a scull is a roll is a part of the normal skill sets.
