You are not alone (and I have just found out that neither am I). Putting your foot through a wrist gasket is MUCH easier than trying to take it off. For me, I was using a rented drysuit for a kayak class. I don't think that the instructor ever found out what was taking me so long, but I was petrified that the rest of class was going to be ready to go out to the water and the instructor was going to come over and help me figure out the dry suit. M. Hamilton wasn't the instructor, but he probably knows one of the few academies that requires wet suit/dry suits in its classes. 
I am very glad that I didn't end up damaging the suit and have to purchase it right then (although I did end up buying one about a year later--from the same instructor).
