I work for an outfitter and we use VHF radios to communicate within our groups and with our base. They work really well though sometimes one has to be carefull about the conversation in front of clients. We have used drycases and found that the moisture that builds up in them eventually kills the radios so we switched to just keeping them attached to our PFD's. We had a rule that no rolling was allowed but one forgets and they survived just fine (Standard brand) with a rinsing afterwards.
Friends took Motorola 2 ways on a trip to Vancouver and they died fairly quickly though I don't know if that was due to manufacturing defects in just the ones taken or if it is a general issue. They took careful precautions to keep them from getting wet.
