In Response To: two-way radios (Mike Hamilton)

Mike,

I use a handheld VHF all the time to communicate between lead and sweep. Wouldn't want to be without it now that I have one. The airwaves are for everybody who uses them responsibly. Don't feel intimidated.

Not only can you communicate with your group and other vessels, you can also monitor in busy channels, which lets you know what the big boys are up to. No surprises this way. And you of course know about calling for help with one, which was the original reason I bought it.

Standard, ICOM, and Raytheon all make "submersible" models. Keep in mind that "waterproof" is only splashproof. The "submersible" models are the only ones that can be carried on a kayak without a drybag. I have a Standard HX150S, which needs a drybag, but even so, I think it's great.

Wayne
