Ian, Jed, Wayne, Gosh I just can't resist adding to these good discussions! I'm with all of the above comments. The process of learning different rolls can only increase one's awareness and comfort with being upside down. Having said that the really hot boaters that I know tend to perform one style of roll all the time. My own experience has been that the ability to keep one's head in a pummelling and roll up is the most important thing. There are kayakers who can do many different rolls in calm water who swim in the real world, so all I'd add is that time in the surf or rivers will really help the combat roll. Two years ago I watched Harvey Golden doing all sorts of cool rolls at a symposium. Just super cool to see him doing amazing things. There were those on the beach being cynical and saying things like "When would you ever need to do that?" I would bet my legs that Harvey would not be a swimmer after a big pummelling, when most of these commentors would. This makes me want to play with more of these greenland rolls myself - maybe build a boat. I love to see that influence!
